The Camden Redevelopment Agency (CRA), in alignment with Mayor Victor G. Carstarphen’s focus on improving the quality of life for Camden residents, and, in its role as Brownfields Coordinator for the City of Camden, obtained brownfield grant funds from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJ DEP) /New Jersey Economic Development Authority(NJEDA). Through the EPA Brownfield and NJDEP’s Hazardous Discharge Site Remediation Fund the clean-up of the soil contaminants will be addressed at the site. Judge Robert B. Johnson Park, located at 723 Carl Miller Boulevard in Census tract 6017 in the Liberty Park neighborhood consists of 14.7 acres of open space, basketball courts, and ball fields. The Park has been closed since soil contamination associated with historic fill was discovered during a site investigation in preparation for making improvements to the site.
CRA, in collaboration with the Camden County Parks Department and the City of Camden, is undertaking the remediation of the park site. Upon completion of the remediation phase, the Camden County Parks Department will continue with the construction of park improvements, including an artificial turf football field.
